Today was a pretty good day at the garden. When the children first arrived we explained to them what we were going to be doing for the day. We told them that we moved theses boxes in a better spot so we would be able to grow everything close together. The children were able to pick who they wanted to work with then we just started taking the fertilizer and putting them into the boxes, so it was a lot of team work and everyone was in a really good mood. It wasn’t as hot as it normally is so everyone was in a pretty good mood. I was able to connect with some of the children and have some good conversations. We had to put three bags of the fertilizer in each square then we had to make four deep lines in the soil and wait for our supervisor to give us some seeds. Today we decided that were going to plant sun flowers so all the children were excited. Once we put the seeds in the soil then we had to cover them up. When the children left all of the seniors went and we had to water the soil so the sunflower seeds can start to grow.
When we finished we all went to talk about our day and what we thought about the children different things like that. We were then asked by our supervisor to get a piece of paper and brainstorm, we were to brainstorm about all of the different things we can do with the children. So we all had to draw, I’m a horrible drawer but I tried, in my picture I drew the boxes where we are going to be planting flowers, fruit, etc whatever seeds we have. Then behind that I wanted to grow some trees for shade so it wouldn’t be as hot when working on the farm, and also put a water fountain next to them. Because it gets really hot I believe the children should have some nice cold water to drink while they work. I also put two shade tents on the side so when the children have snacks and other things they can have a place to get out of the sun and eat, and drink. The tent next to that would be an activity tent, for example we might be able to get some paint and let them decorate their own flower pots and take it home. Then I also thought we should have a tool box so we wouldn’t have to keep bringing our tools back and forth every day. And lastly we need a place to park so I made sure I left a space for everyone to park their cars.
Today was the first day working with the Safe Haven Children, at the farm. We arrived at 8:00 am, but they didn’t come till about 9:00am. It started to get so hot, I was lucky that I decided to take my allergy medicine before I came. Today we were lucky and we didn’t have to work that hard, my duties were to take one of the children and start to pick weeds with them. For me I saw that as an opportunity to get to know the girl will be working with for the next few months, so I started to ask her questions about what she likes to do and things like that so she would become comfortable with me. She started to complain how hot she was, so I tried to change the subject, so she would keep working but it didn’t work. After we were done with the weeds we started to pick different types of peppers and put them in a box for the children, which they were able to sort out who gets what later. After we picked them all the children were able to go into the shade and have something cool to drink, then they left and we will do it all over again next week !!!!
When the children left we had to move the garden boxes from the green house to a new location because they will add a water line to help whatever seeds we decide to plant in them grow better. When we moved that we had the option to leave, but we all sat and talked about what we thought and what we could have done better , basically whatever was on our mind about what went on today. I never really thought about some of the different comments some of my classmates made, like coming to the garden with us every Wednesday for them might be an escape from their everyday life and that even though they may not smile while there out there in the hot sun, deep down they really do enjoy it, and I look forward to gardening with them again next Wednesday !!!!
